Some of the projects that are taking place at this ranch include historic streambed restoration, native oak and pine tree planting, and historic preservation of historic buildings and landmarks. We are currently working to restore the many streams on the ranch to their native path as they were degraded by water dredging and past mining. We have planted many trees on the premises to assist the regeneration of the native trees. No Hunting signs have been posted around the property to protect the wildlife as well as the integrity of the land. We have restored and protected the historical landmarks and artifacts that were left behind by the old timers. We have been working on shaded fuel breaks to protect the Town of Paradise as well as the Butte Creek Canyon community. This is our old family ranch.  Dr. Merritt Horning was born and died here.  Our family settled here during the Gold Rush and there was a lot of family struggle and history.  Our projects that are taking place at this ranch include historic streambed restoration, native oak and pine tree planting, and preservation of historic buildings including cabins, barns, bridges, wagon roads, Chinese settlements and graves, and other landmarks. We have done substantial restoration of stream banks on the Ranch as they were degraded where by water dredging and pioneer mining. We have planted a lot of oaks, pines and cedar trees.  You have to get late rains to get bare root plantings to survive.  We have Ponderosa Pines 15 feet tall.   A few winter's ago (2009), we didn’t plant because we didn’t have the resources.  This year the Magalia Tree Farm closed, probably forever, due to lack of funding.  It will probably not reopen.  It is a fatality of government cutting spending in areas with the least impact politically.  Trees take a very long time.  Government has been forced to think very short-term. | |
